I used a K2500R from roughly 1997 to 2002. I tried a demo version of Kontakt, thinking that I'd use it to augment what I had going already with the Kurzweil. After about a half hour, I'd made the decision to sell the K2500R and buy Kontakt. Honestly.Does Kontakt crash? Yes, but very rarely for me (Windows XP here).
People rave about the stability of hardware, but my K2500R often required hard resets when an errant.krz file would hoop the PRAM. In short, I find Kontakt at least as stable as the multi-thousand dollar Kurzweil. Throw in the GUI, turfing SCSI and gaining far better file management, and you've got a clear winner.Where VAST is concerned, you're probably more into it than I was. Digging through those LCD menus and soft buttons wasn't for me. However, I'd be shocked if you didn't find Kontakt's modular architecture at least as powerful as the Kurzweil.
I program sounds a lot more now because Kontakt's GUI makes features far more accessible. The time machine and granular synthesis capabilities of Kontakt are something the Kurzweil can't touch.Be warned that you won't have an easy go converting your K2000 sample CDs. Kontakt doesn't convert them.
Don't be fooled by the.krz import features of Project 5 and Mach 5. They pull over basic samples and keymaps.
Unless Kurzweil comes out with a soft synth (and I doubt it), VAST just isn't available in software. If you want to pull over the raw samples, Chicken Systems Translator or CDExtract do the job just fine.I hope some of this helps you in your decision making. I don't think that in terms of sound quality.something. is ever going to beat KurzweilYet it also really depends on the music you're making, huh? -when it comes to sampling exclusively - the modulation abilities of even k2000 put Kontakt to shame. But hey - is everyone a power user?
I have a K2600 and kontakt.I also think that Kontakt comes not close to the K. Ok, I have VAST2 etc.But Kontakt as also some nice things - and it is much more transportable than the k.
The interface looks pretty Windows3.1 but at times a little bit more convenient than the K. especially for sample zone stuff. And with the 1.52 update seems like kontakt is again playing in the major leaque.K is a synthesizer with sample functionality - Kontakt is a sampler with synthesizer functionality. For my taste the filters of Kontakt and also other algorithm are not that great.best.
I actually think that Absynth is similar to the K2000 - I would love to get other peoples opinion on this. I love the K2000 but I found that no matter what plugins I tried I was never able to mutate samples the way I was with the kurzweil. Now after getting absynth I'm beginning to see similarities. The way I can combine samples and waveforms and get strange distorted harmonic sounds - this seems similar to the kurzweil. Does anybody else agree?I wonder if NI plans on developing the sampling in absynth any further? If NI could combine Absynth and Kontakt into one plug that would be absolute maddness!!!!
I think the programmers would go insane. I too have a full-blown K2500, (88keys, sampling, KDFX.), and it truly is a deep and marvelous piece of software - but, the material aspect is more like a Friday Ford - in for expensive repairs too often, and always the same feeling, as if I had bought a Rolls made of plastic. But it definitely will remain an integral part of my studio til it (or I) falls to pieces. Incidentally, its sequencer is very usable, so it's a self-contained production tool!Kontakt will evolve, so I'm sure the two of them will get into sibling fights now and then.aip. Interesting to see some of the points. In my opinion, if you're not using VAST that much, then you've wasted your money, would be better off with an Akai, or a PC2.
As far as I am concerned, my K2600XS is my main noisemaker. 90% of the sounds come from that beast. I've spent countless hours programming it, and yes you can do wonderful things with FUNs. It has never been in for repair, and works like a charm, and is left on for months at a time (mostly studio use here).I have the Komplete package, and still turn to the Kurzweil for most of the stuff. Turning to other things that the Kurzweil can't do with ease.Does Kontakt have some things on the Kurzweil? It's much easier to do keymapping, and general editing.
Finding proper loop points is also much easier. Can't beat a GUI. I really like the 'Time Machine'.
Anything that will take AM radio noise and turn into a lush pad is a keeper in my book. The beat machine is also great for working with drum loops, although I use Intakt for that more, and in many cases, chop them with ReCycle, and shoot them over the the Kurzweil, just because it can do things nothing else can. Using WRAP to turn it into white noise, and then gradually bringing it back, and all of a sudden have an Amen emerge is a great experience.
Compared to the Kurzweil (ok, I am taking into account Triple Modular Processing) it's signal path is rather limited. I guess I am spoiled, being able to chain filters with embedded shaper, dist and WRAP blocks is a really powerful way of mangling sounds. Modulating samples with other samples is another. Speaking of modulation.
Modulating the envelopes, when using them as LFOs (by turning on Loop and setting it to Inf) with RANDs (or some of the chaotic FUNs) can add real life to pads, drones and other soundscapes, make them so that they constantly evolve, never sounding the same. Noisewreck,I agree with all your praise for the Kurzweil (Ray Kurzweil is a great thinker and author, as well), but when I speak of repairs, I only wish to warn anyone thinking of buying the keyboard version of the K2500 (the K2600 is perhaps a better built machine), that it is a hardware nightmare requiring very qualified repair service when it sneezes - and it will. Other than that, as I said, it is profound software, and does indeed have excellent sound capacity, as well as one of the most complete sets of controllers on any synth - and I use those controllers a lot when working on Reaktor and Kontakt. Its only obvious weak point is that of most keyboards when compared to software samplers - small screen and sub-menus. But that hasn't prevented me from doing entire CDs using its internal sequencer.Do you know if there's a Mac editor for the Kxxx anywhere available?
(or a Mac editor for the Wavestation - another deep synth)Thanks for any leads, and Vive Kxxx!aip. That wasn't my intention. I just wanted to point out that I have never experienced those issues, that many K2500 users have complained about, it seems with the K2600 they addressed many of the issues. Like the buttons breaking for example.I don't know of any editors. Kurzweil stubbornly doesn't want to open up the source code to developers so they can develop editor/librarians for it.
The only things I am aware of are a couple of hacks that basically imitate the kurzweil interface on the computer. Check out one of the posters there has done something for the Mac OSX.Let's see what Samick does with them.
